[Class 74 (ii).] Knitting, methods of.-A seamless stocking having a rib top and a plain knitted leg and foot is begun at the toe and the change from plain to rib knitting is made without transference of loops, the rib loops being additional so that there are a greater number of loops per course in the rib top than in the leg &c. Circular machines for knitting by the method set out above are furnished with a top head which includes a needle carrier 1, preferably rotary, for the rib needles 2 of the swing jack type. The top head is movable vertically and is also bodily removable to permit of access to the component parts. The top head is brought down from the position shown in the Figure to the normal working position by the action of a pattern-controlled lever 17, against springs 25. The stems of the needles 2 run in a track 32 and are controlled by cams which can be put in and out of action. A cam 33 for pressing off the needles on completion of a rib top is operated by a slide 41 which is put in action by lowering a plunger carrying a cam nose 43 under pattern control. The clearing cam is operated similarly by another cam 39 on the plunger. A disc 100 provides a draw and knocking- over edge for the rib needles and, when a 1/1 rib top is being made, holds down the work. The web holders 101 are withdrawn at this time with their nibs accommodated in tricks in the underside of the disc. For obtaining sectional splicing in the foot and/or above the heel a device is provided which includes sectional cams 95, 96 (Figs. 9 and 10, not shown) mounted on ratchet wheels for rotation intermittently in opposite directions in timed relation with the needle cylinder.
