1. A method for screening to identify a compound with anti-human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) activity, the method comprising:
(1) contacting HIV-1 infected cells and target cells with a candidate compound, wherein the target cells are susceptible to HIV-1 infection; and (2) measuring cell-to-cell transmission of HIV-1 in the presence and absence of the candidate compound, wherein cell-to-cell transmission of HIV-1 is measured by tracking mitochondrial movement from the HIV-1 infected cells to the target cells, and a reduction in mitochondrial movement from the HIV-1 infected cells to the target cells in the presence of the candidate compound relative to the absence of the candidate compound indicates that the candidate compound is an inhibitor of cell-to-cell HIV-1 transmission. |
