Provided is a memory controller which controls a nonvolatile memory device and manages a bad block of the nonvolatile memory device. The memory controller checks the bad block of the nonvolatile memory device and includes an alternative block requesting unit to request an alternative block and an alternative block providing unit which provides the alternative block by referring to the number of free blocks and the kind of the bad block according to the alternative block request.
