Data transmission apparatus and method

A grid comprising smart meters with at least two IDs in which one of the IDs is used by the smart meter for sending consumption data that needs to attributed to the owner or user of the smart meter, for example for billing purposes. In particular, the device has means for storing one or more IDs that are attributed to a physical metering device and a plurality of IDs that are not attributable any physical metering device. Furthermore, the device has means to receiving messages comprising data and a sender ID and means to compare the sender ID with the stored IDs. The device provides the received data to a first communication channel if the sender ID corresponds with one of IDs attributed to the physical devices IDs, and alternatively it provide the received data to a second communication channel if the sender ID corresponds with one of IDs not attributed to the physical devices IDs.
