A process for making buttons from ivory nut waste comprises finely triturating the waste, softening the powder thus obtained with a substance capable of acting on the cellulose therein, moulding the softened mass, either hot or cold, under high pressure into buttons, or plates or discs to be turned into buttons, and then polishing and finishing. The pressure may be as high as 350 atmospheres. The softening by a solvent, such as ammoniacal copper nitrate, ammoniacal sodium nitrate, carbon bisulphide, or zinc chloride, may be carried out in a pump or mixing machine, and, when necessary, any excess of solvent is neutralized. The mass may be bleached or dyed prior to moulding.
