PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a counting method for bar that can accurately count stacked bars. SOLUTION: The counting method for bar includes a detection picture plane acquisition step of obtaining a detection picture plane 2 including an image 11 of an end face of each of a plurality of stacked bars 1; a template image storing step of storing an image of a desired shape corresponding to shapes of the end faces of the bars 11 as a template image; a binarization step of detecting luminance of each pixel of the detection picture plane 2, setting a predetermined threshold according to a maximum luminance value among detected luminance values, and obtaining a binarized picture plane 4 by binarizing the detection picture plane based upon the set threshold; and an image erasure step of identifying an end face image 11 having an area within a predetermined range with respect to the area of a template image 3 for each end face image 11 in the binarized picture plane 4, counting the identified end face images 11, and erasing the identified end face images 11 from the detection picture plane 2. The binarization step and the image erasure step are repeated until all end face images in the detection picture plane 2 are erased, and an integrated value of the number of images counted in the image erasure step is determined as the number of stacked bars.
