A parking area detecting method is disclosed. The parking area detecting method comprises the steps of: generating a top-view image by photographing the surroundings of a vehicle; detecting a first direction parking line in the top-view image; detecting a second direction parking line having a different direction from that of the first direction parking line in the top-view image; and detecting a parking area by combining the first direction parking line and the second direction parking line.
