PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce influences of ash onto deterioration of a performance of a particulate filter.SOLUTION: A particulate filter 24 for collecting a particulate substance contained in exhaust gas is arranged in an engine exhaust passage. A movement promotion control for promoting ash accumulated on an inner periphery of an exhaust gas inflow passage of the particulate filter to move to a deep part of the exhaust gas inflow passage is executed by increasing temperature of the particulate filter to movement promotion temperature. A capacity reduction control for reducing a capacity of ash on the particulate filter is executed by increasing the temperature of the particulate filter to capacity-reduction temperature higher than the movement promotion temperature.
