This transmission is provided with a variator which can continuously change the transmission ratio and with a stepped transmission mechanism which is arranged in series with the variator and in which the gear position changes; this transmission is further provided with a transmission control unit which, if a gear upshift condition is met, performs gear shifting involving repeating a shift suppression phase and an upshift phase. When shifting gears, if the stepped transmission mechanism is in the nth gear, the transmission control unit finishes changing from the nth gear to the (n+1)th gear of the stepped transmission mechanism before the through-speed ratio reaches the highest transmission ratio of the variator.
