An image reading apparatus (100) comprises: an image reading unit (1) that reads originals; an original conveying unit (2) that conveys the originals one after another toward a reading position; a setting input unit (3) that accepts a mixture mode in which to read a plurality of originals having different sizes; a size determining unit (7) that determines the size of each page of the originals in the main scan direction; a blank detecting unit (8) that repeats, before completion of reading one page, a detection as to whether a blank-detected area (F) in image data is a blank or not and that, during performance of reading in the mixture mode, performs a blank detection process by the main scanned widths of a plurality of types of blank-detected areas (F) in accordance with a plurality of types of original sizes and that determines whether any ones of the originals are blanks or not by use of the detection results obtained by the main scanned widths corresponding to the determined sizes of the originals in the main scan direction; and a blank removing unit (9) that removes the image data of any originals detected as blanks.
