The element (1) has a varistor rotatably supported in a housing (2). A pole of the varistor is connected to a connecting element via a plug connection. A spring element is arranged between the housing and the varistor in such a manner that the varistor is turned by the spring element when the varistor is thermally overloaded, so that the pole is removed from electrically contact with the connecting element. A thermally separating connection is arranged between the varistor and the housing and is disconnected when the varistor temperature exceeds a predetermined boundary temperature.
