<p>The invention relates to novel peridinin-chlorophyll binding proteins (PCPs) and describes for the first time the recombinant expression of soluble PCPs. The invention also relates to nucleic acid sequences encoding the PCPs and to the production of the PCPs. Novel gene sequences were isolated from the Symbiodinium species (zooxanthellae) in the soft coral Sinularia flexibilis. Expression in E. coli produces high yields of soluble, active PCPs. The recombinant PCPs are highly stable and become near infra-red emitting on binding to chlorophylls and carotenoids. The novel PCPs are useful, for example, in fluorescent labelling.</p> |
