Disclosed are compositions, kits, and methods for detecting, extracting, visualizing, characterizing, and/or identifying one or more protozoa. Various types of polymerase chain reaction techniques in connection with specifically designed oligonucleotide probes can be used to detect a variety of, e.g., pathogenic, protozoa in samples.

1. A protozoa detection method for a reaction mixture capable of amplifying a segment of the nucleic acid target to produce an amplicon, the method comprising:
amplifying the segment of the nucleic acid target to produce the amplicon; and determining by detecting the amplicon that a sample contains one or more protozoa or that the sample has an increased likelihood of containing the one or more protozoa if the amplicon.
