Anthraquinone dyes of the formula <FORM:0413658/IV/1> wherein AQ stands for anthraquinonyl or substituted anthraquinonyl residue, R<1> and R<11> for hydrogen or alkyl (R<1> and R<11> being identical or different but not both being hydrogen), are prepared by reducing a disulphide of the formula <FORM:0413658/IV/2> and condensing the resulting aminomercaptan with an a -halogenacid, X--CR<1>R<11>--COOH (X is halogen). The products are applied to animal fibres from a weak acid bath and subsequently lactamised on the fibre as described in Specification 406,733. In Examples: (1) the intermediate from 2.2<1>-dinitro-4.4<1>-dicarboxy-diphenyldisulphide and a -aminoanthraquinone (cf. Example 1 of 406,733) is reduced with sodium sulphide and condensed with a -bromopropionic acid and a -bromo-n-butyric acid; the products on lactamisation on the fibre yield bright yellow shades; (2) the intermediate from 2.2<1> - dinitro - 4.4<1> - dicarboxydiphenyl-disulphide and 1 - amino - 4 - methoxyanthraquinone (cf. Example 2 of Specification 406,733) is reduced with sodium sulphide and condensed with a -bromo-n-butyric acid; the product lactamised on the fibre yields bright scarlet shades; (3) the intermediate from 2.2<1>-dinitro-4.4<1>-dicarboxydiphenyldisulphide and 1-amino-4-methylaminoanthraquinone is reduced with sodium sulphide and condensed with a -bromo-n-butyric acid; on lactamisation the product yields reddish-blue shades on the fibre.
