A sled (206) is axially mounted at a frame (205) and comprises first and second jaws (301, 302) moveably mounted at the sled to allow a substantially linear lateral movement across the sled to and from one another. A plurality of rod engagers (400, 401) are mounted at each jaw with at least one of the engagers comprising an abrasive surface (703) formed from a coating to increase the frictional force between the drill rod and the gripping apparatus.
