Provided are a production method for catalyst microparticles that exhibit high activity from the outset of production, and a fuel cell containing catalyst microparticles produced by the production method. The production method is for catalyst microparticles that include palladium-containing particles and a platinum outer layer covering the palladium-containing particles, the production method for catalyst microparticles being characterized in that: the palladium-containing particles and a first solution in which a platinum compound has been dissolved are mixed, at least partially coating the surfaces of the palladium-containing particles with platinum, thereby forming a first complex containing palladium and platinum; the first complex and a second solution in which a copper compound has been dissolved are mixed, and using a copper underpotential deposition process, the surfaces of the first complex are at least partially coated with copper, thereby forming a second complex containing palladium, platinum, and copper; and the second complex and a third solution in which a platinum compound has been dissolved are mixed, whereby the copper in the second complex is substituted with platinum derived from the third solution. |
