In the production of iron or steel, a container or blank is produced by forming a core of powdered carbon, powdered iron ore and binding substances in the proportions suitable for the production of iron sponge, placing this core in a mould of such a size that a space is formed between the inside of the mould and the core and then filling this space with molten pig iron so that the core will be enclosed in a pig iron shell. A central channel may be formed in the core and then filled with the molten iron, so that a central iron rod is formed. The blank so formed is then inserted in a furnace and heated to 800-1150 DEG C., for the conversion of the ore to iron sponge. The blank may then be removed and melted in another furnace. If desired the reduction and melting may be carried out in the same furnace, pig iron or scrap being added to the sponge before the melting takes place.
|
