This application is concerned with emulating RF signals. In a preferred embodiment such emulated signals are used for training an operator of signal detection apparatus, such as apparatus for locating the position of a signal source, e.g. RADAR apparatus. According to the invention an IQ baseband signal is weighted 22 and the weighted IQ signal is upconverted 24 to an RF signal. In one embodiment (not shown) respective weights are applied to each of a plurality of sets of IQ data, each IQ data set representing a signal from a respective virtual transmitter i. The resulting multiple weighted IQ signals are then linearly combined in baseband. In another embodiment multiple RF signals 1,2,...M are generated and combined 25. This permits the emulation of multi-band signals. Preferably, the RF signal is transmitted to the trainee operators signal detection apparatus over a cable 11. The weights may be selected to model channel propagation, terrain, antenna characteristics or transmitter characteristics. |
