Provided is a polyphenylene ether copolymer having excellent heat resistance, fluidity, and mechanical properties such as tensile strength and tensile elastic modulus. Said polyphenylene ether copolymer has, at least, a specific 2,5-disubstituted phenylene structure and a specific ortho-substituted phenylene structure as constituent units, and is characterized by having a thermogravimetrically-measured decomposition temperature of at least 390°C. A preferable copolymer has a 2,5-dimethylphenylene structure and a 2,6-dimethylphenylene structure and is obtained by oxidative-coupling polymerization of 2,5-dimethylphenylene ether and 2,6-dimethylphenylene ether using a copper-amine catalyst. |
