Preferably the blend also includes one or more fluoropolymers. The addition of the nanoparticles was found to enhance the conductivity and mechanical properties of the membranes.

A composite blend membrane comprising a blend of: a) fluoropolymer, wherein said fluoropolymer is a polyvinylidene fluoride homopolymer or copolymer containing at least 70 weight % of vinylidene fluoride monomer units; b) one or more polyelectrolytes; and c) one or more types of nanoparticles, wherein said nanoparticles are selected from the groups consisting of metal sulfates, metal phosphates, nanoclays, zirconium hydrogen phosphate, zirconium hydroxide sulfated, zirconium phosphate, zeolites, silica, sulfonated silica, carbon nanotubes, graphenes, fullerenes, nanodiamonds, sulfonated nanotubes, silsesquioxanes, silsesquioxanes functionalized with groups containing sulfonic acid, metal-organic framework (MOF) materials, transition metal sulfides, transition metal selenides, transition metal tellurides, cadmium selenide (CdSe), cadmium telluride (CdTe), lead sulfide (PdS), palladium, gold and platinum, graphene, graphite, and montmorillonite, and wherein said nanoparticles have a diameter of from 0.5 nm to 1000 nm.
