Provided are a display device and a television receiver with which it is possible to suppress imbalances in luminance distribution in a liquid crystal panel. This display device comprises a liquid crystal panel and a plurality of light sources that emit light onto the liquid crystal panel, wherein the display device inserts a black signal in a predetermined period within the frame period of each of a plurality of video frames. Further, the light sources emit light onto respective regions in the liquid crystal panel, and, in order along the direction in which said regions are lined up, the display device makes said regions display respective signals in each said video frame, in which said black signal has been inserted, said signals corresponding to the respective regions. The display device also makes each light source emit light onto the corresponding region during a latter period within a period in which each region in the liquid crystal panel is made to display the corresponding signal. The display device is configured such that the luminance of light from each of the light sources corresponding to the respective regions becomes lower in order in which the respective regions in the liquid crystal panel are made to display the corresponding signals. |
