<p>A still image (120) to be displayed on a screen of a video display device (110) is progressively transmitted via a video network to the display operating at a predetermined frame rate. The still images to be transmitted are encoded into a base layer and at least one enhancement layer, the base layer allowing display of still images in low resolution. The base layer and the at least one enhancement layer are transmitted in at least two different video frames according to the predetermined frame rate, the encoding preferably being based on the available bandwidth of the network. A video image may also be transmitted within each of the video frames. The still image may be superimposed on the background video display, and may comprise a picture in picture image. Alternatively, the still image may be displayed alone. The base layer and the at least one enhancement layer may comprise chroma sub-sampling information.</p> |
