1. A gaming system comprising:
a display having a plurality of display positions; and a game controller comprising:
(1) a symbol selector configured to select a plurality of symbols from a set of symbols for display in respective ones of the plurality of display positions on the display, said game controller configured to cause the display to display the selected said plurality of symbols on said display;(2) a plural special symbol determiner configured to determine whether a plural special symbol representing a number (N) of special symbols is selected for display in one of the plurality of display positions, said game controller configured to cause the display to display the plural special symbol in said one of the plurality of display positions;(3) a symbol modifier configured to operate in response to a determination that a plural special symbol is selected to be displayed in said one of the plurality of display positions and to modify the display of the plural special symbol displayed in said one of the plurality of display positions by causing said game controller to cause the display to (i) display one singular special symbol in said one of the plurality of display positions, and ii) display at least one other singular special symbol in no more than a number (N−1) of the plurality of display positions; and (4) an outcome generator configured to determine a game outcome based on the displayed symbols as modified by the symbol modifier.
