An image processing apparatus comprising: an image input unit configured to receive at least one of a first left eye image and a first right eye image photographed from different viewpoints and applicable to stereoscopic vision; a stereoscopic image generation processing unit configured to receive one of the first left eye image and the first right eye image and generate a second left eye image and a second right eye image applicable to the stereoscopic vision through an image conversion process, wherein, among the first left eye image and the first right eye image input to the image input unit and the second left eye image and the second right eye image generated by the stereoscopic image generation processing unit, two images are output as images to be applied to the stereoscopic vision; and an output image selection processing unit configured to select two images to be applied to the stereoscopic vision as output images from the first left eye image and the first right eye image input to the image input unit and the second left eye image and the second right eye image generated by the stereoscopic image generation processing unit, wherein the output image selection processing unit selects using a depth map: the first left eye image and the first right eye image input to the image input unit as the output images when it is determined that the object distance is greater than a first predetermined threshold based on the depth map, andthe second left eye image and the second right eye image generated by the stereoscopic image generation processing unit as the output images when it is determined that the object distance is less than a second predetermined threshold on the depth map.
