摘要 446,287. Envelopemaking machines. SMITHE MACHINE CO., Inc., F. L., 633, West 44th Street, New York, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Novick, A.; Flushing, New York, U.S.A.) Oct. 26, 1934, No. 30820. Convention date, Nov. 13, 1933. [Class 94 (ii)] An envelope-making machine is provided with means 1 for guming and folding the side and bottom flaps, and for gumming the sealing flaps of individual blanks, a drying conveyer 12 comprising a series of parallel cross members 41 and means 9, 10, 11 for depositing the envelopes of the conveyer in fanned-out relation with the wet margins exposed to the drying air through the cross members and means for holding the fanned-out envelopes in engagement with the cross members to prevent the side and bottom flaps from opening during the passage of the envelopes on the conveyer. Envelopes, in the form shown in Fig. 4, are delivered by segments 6 and roller 5 from the gumming and folding device 1 to a pair of cam and spring operated grippers 9, 10 moved by a chain 13, the gummed sealing flap 3 trailing and the gum patch 4 facing downwardly. The speed of the chain, driven by elliptical gearing 23, 24, varies in its path, being slower when the grippers are at the receiving or delivering ends and faster intermediately. The forward edge of each envelope is moved to contact with the faces 29 of teeth on ratchet wheels 28, rotated on shaft 16, to bring each envelope to rest without a sudden blow. On release by the grippers 9, 10 at the delivery end of the chain 13, each envelope is pressed on to the drying conveyer 12 by a roller 31, swung downwardly, and further rollers 32, on pivoted arms 33, assist to feed the envelopes forward, under a holddown plate 36, to be held by belts 47 on to cross-bars 41 of the chains 39, 40 of the drying conveyer 12 and thence led through a blower chest. The envelope blanks are positioned so that each gummed area is exposed to the drier through the cross members or bars 41 of the conveyer 12. The bars 41 are slightly below the pitch line of the conveyer and are wide enough to take all usual sizes of envelopes. Their position relative to the delivery from chain 13 is adjustable by means of set screws connecting the sprockets 43 to the driving spindle 44. Specification 440,027 is referred to.
