The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition or a health functional food containing an extract of Oenanthe javanica DC as an active ingredient for treating and preventing immunodeficiency disease. The extract suppresses the expression of cytokines including IL-2, IL-4, and IFN-γ and iNOS in human macrophage cell lines as well as in murine macrophage cell lines so as to inhibit hyper immune responses and the production of NO induced by LPS in immune cells and control immune imbalance, thereby providing a pharmaceutical composition or a health functional food useful for treating and preventing immunodeficiency disease.
