PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a safety needle assembly that is equipped with both of a visual flash indicator and a safety shield and that has a very low risk of exposure to a medical worker.SOLUTION: A needle assembly includes a housing having a flash chamber 38, and having a distal end 40 and a proximal end 42 that can be engaged with a specimen collection container. The assembly includes a cannula 34 having a patient side end, a non-patient side end, and a sidewall 48 extending therebetween defining a cannula interior 50. The patient side end of the cannula projects at least partially from a distal end 74 of the housing, and the cannula interior is in fluid communication with the flash chamber. The assembly further includes a shield 36. The shield 36 is engaged with a portion of the housing, and axially movable over the patient cannula from a storage position in which the patient side end is exposed, to an extended position in which the patient side end is covered to be protected by the shield. |
