PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing a solid metal-containing copolymer excellent in the solubility to a solvent and the appearance of a coating film obtained therefrom. SOLUTION: The method of manufacturing a metal-containing copolymer involves dispersing and polymerizing a metal-containing ethyleneic unsaturated monomer (A) and an ethylenic unsaturated monomer (B) in an aqueous medium, wherein the metal-containing copolymer is prepared by reacting the metal-containing ethyleneic unsaturated monomer (A) comprising an inorganic metal compound (a1), a carboxylic group-containing ethyleneic unsaturated monomer (a2) and a non-polymerizable organic acid (a3) of 0.15 to 1.8 in molar equivalent to the compound (a1), with the ethylenic unsaturated monomer (B) other than the monomer (a2).
