A method of manufacturing a graphene sheet comprises the steps of: providing a container 10 containing liquid 12 and a volume above the liquid; supplying carbon atoms to the volume; and allowing carbon atoms to settle on the surface of the liquid and to coalesce to form the graphene sheet 26. Apparatus suitable for carrying out the method is also claimed, as well as a graphene sheet formed by the method. Preferably, the carbon atoms (14, fig 1a) are supplied via a port 16, and may derive from a carbon containing precursor gas, such as a hydrocarbon like methane or ethane and especially a carbohydrate, or from a particulate graphite precursor. The liquid 12 may be agitated, e.g. by mechanical stirring or ultrasonic agitation 24, in order to encourage graphene fragments (18, fig 1a) to coalesce into graphene sheets 26. Preferably, the graphene sheet 26 is removed from the liquid after formation, e.g. by draining the liquid and resting the sheet on a porous substrate (30, figs 2a and 2b) or by collection on a roller (32, figs 3a and 3b). |
