Vegetable fibres are mercerized with addition, as wetting agent, to the alkaline mercerizing solution, of an alkali metal salt of a sulphamic acid of the general formula <FORM:0455893/IV/1> wherein R1 represents an alkyl group, R2 represents an alkyl group containing at least 3 carbon atoms, and both R1 and R2 contain less than 8 carbon atoms. In examples, cotton is mercerized with addition to the solution of (1) sodium di-n-propyl-sulphamate, (2) sodium di-isobutyl-sulphamate dissolved in technical xylenol with an addition of crude xylene. Specification 410,164 is referred to. Dialkylsulphamic acids of the above general formula are obtained by the action of sulphonating agents, such as sulphur trioxide, chlorosulphonic acid or amidosulphonic acid, on the corresponding dialkylamines.
