Inductive power transfer system and method

Disclosed is a foreign object detection apparatus for an IPT system. The apparatus comprises a control means operable to detect the presence of a foreign object on or adjacent to an IPT primary pad of the system by detecting a reduction in magnitude of the short circuit current in a secondary pad which receives power inductively from the primary pad. Measurements of reactive power in a primary of the system may also be used to detect foreign objects.
