Disclosed is a method of ensuring integrity of data transmitted in a data network. The method includes a sending intelligent electronic device (IED) calculating a first data integrity value based on a sending IED identification and a variable datum; the sending IED and a receiving IED being in electrical communication using the data network. The sending IED constructs a network packet comprising the first data integrity value and the variable datum wherein the first data integrity value is calculated based on the sending IED identification and the variable datum. The sending IED omits the sending IED identification from the network packet and the transmits the network data packet. The receiving IED receives the network packet comprising the first data integrity value and the variable datum. The receiving IED calculates a second data integrity value based on the sending IED identification and the received variable datum. The receiving IED then verifies the network packet by comparing the first data integrity value and the second data integrity value. |
