[Classes 72 and 82 (i)] A process for refining metals or metalbearing material consists in supplying to a molten bath 16 of the material, an oxidizing reagent consisting of a metal and a metallic oxide heated within a substantially hollow electrode 14 to a temperature above the melting point of the metal to induce an oxidizing action between the reagent and an oxidizable undesirable constituent of the bath to remove such constituent. The reagent is formed in the heated zone of the electrode by supplying thereto a mixture of a metallic oxide and a reducing agent insufficient in quantity for reducing the whole of the oxide, the mixture being heated to a temperature above that at which reduction takes place and above the melting point of the reduced metal. The reducing agent may be carbon whereby an atmosphere of carbon monoxide is maintained in the furnace. The reagent is fed through the cores in the form of briquettes c and drops into the bath as liquid. Substances may be added to the reagent to accelerate or retard its flow and correctives may be introduced either through the electrodes or directly into the bath for maintaining the slag 19 in a permeable condition for the reagent and also to supply an oxide thereto to avoid removal of the metal oxide from the reagent. The reagent should be heated to a temperature of from 400 to 600‹ F. above the melting point of the metal to ensure solution or dispersion of the oxide in the metal. The undesirable constituents of the bath to be removed by oxidation may be carbon, sulphur, phosphorus or manganese. In the making and refining of alloys containing for example iron, chromium, manganese or nickel, oxides of the metals may be introduced through the electrodes. Silicon may be a constituent of the alloy. Examples are given of methods of preparing low carbon ferromanganese, stainless steel, and carbon-free iron.</p>
