The invention relates to an energy management device for use in an electrical installation having an energy store (48), a connection to a mains electrical grid (14), and a generator (10,12) providing an electrical output which is coupled to a generator inverter (22,24) which converts the generator's electrical output to AC for driving a load (56,58). The energy management device comprises at least one bi-directional inverter (26) which has an AC side (28) and a DC side (30). The AC side of the bi-directional inverter is connectable to the generator inverter and to the load. The bi-directional inverter is controllable by means of a signal taken from the mains electrical grid to provide on its AC side an AC voltage which varies in sympathy with that of the mains electrical grid. The DC side of the bi-directional inverter is connectable to the energy store to supply electrical energy to it. The bi-directional inverter is able to pass electrical power both (a) in the direction from the AC side to the DC side, to charge the energy store and (b) in the direction from the DC side to the AC side, to supply energy from the energy store to the load. |
