A radio site controller is configured to dynamically activate adjacent radio sites by first identifying, based at least on a current location of a subscriber unit in a currently activated first radio site, a currently de-activated second radio site located adjacent to the first radio site, and subsequent activating the identified second radio site. The identified second radio site may be a single de-activated adjacent second radio site, all de-activated adjacent second radio sites, or a subset of de-activated adjacent second radio sites based on a subscriber unit travel direction determination. |

1. A method of selectively activating adjacent radio sites, the method comprising:
identifying, by a radio controller and based at least on a current location of a subscriber unit in a currently activated first radio site, a plurality of second radio sites located adjacent the first radio site; accessing, by the radio controller, a site activation mapping that, for each second radio site adjacent the first radio site, identifies a current activation state of the second radio site; identifying, by the radio controller and as a function of the site activation mapping, a set of one or more second radios sites from the plurality of second radio sites that have a current activation state of de-activated; transmitting, by the radio controller, activation messages to only those second radio sites in the identified set, the activation message comprising an instruction to transition from a de-activated state to an activated state; and modifying, by the radio controller, the site activation mapping to indicate the current activation state of the second radio sites in the identified set as activated. |
