481,524. Supporting thrust bearings. WHELAN, W. Sept. 12, 1936, No. 24881. [Class 12 (i)] The thrust bearing 13 for a ship's propeller shaft 10 or the like is mounted in a cross-head 16, the opposite ends of which are connected to piston-rods 17, one on each side of the longitudinal axis of the bearing. The rods 17 having pistons 22 slidable in cylinders 18. The pistons 22 are normally located half-way in each cylinder adjacent a port 23 for the admittance of pressure fluid into the cylinder. Upon racing of the engine the fluid trapped on one side or other of each piston 22 forms a cushion and prevents hunting of the bearing. Pipes 31 with valves 32 may connect opposite sides of the cylinders. Alternatively, the pistons may be grooved. The pressure fluid used may be lubricating oil and it may be taken from the system supplying oil to the thrust bearing.
|
