Provided are a projector that projects a pattern for user motion recognition and a motion recognition apparatus and method using the projector. The projector includes a light generation unit, a light guide unit configured to guide light generated from the light generation unit in a predetermined direction, a collimating lens configured to collimate the light transmitted from the light guide unit, and a diffractive optical element (DOE) configured to generate the pattern using the light passing through the collimating lens.;In addition, the motion recognition apparatus includes a projector configured to project a pattern, a camera configured to photograph the projected pattern to generate an image including depth information, and a control unit configured to recognize a motion of a user using the image including the depth information and carry out a command corresponding to the recognized motion of the user.
