PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper stacking device for detecting the rounding of paper and for preventing the rounded paper not being detected from being stacked until a stacking tray is full therewith. SOLUTION: The paper stacking device includes a hollow detecting means 123 having a light emitting element 123a and a light receiving element 123b for detecting a hollow penetrating a paper bundle on its cross section parallel to the paper stacking surface of the stacking tray 102 in a direction perpendicular to a paper carrying direction. The detecting operation of the hollow detecting means 123 is canceled out for a predetermined time, and the detecting operation is started after the passage of a predetermined time. A paper rounding determining means determines the occurrence of paper rounding in a paper stacking section according to a paper size on the basis of the detection result of the hollow detecting means 123. When it is determined that the paper rounding occurs, the paper rounding determining means performs an abnormal operation stop to stop subsequent paper stacking operation by the control of a stacking device control part, and transmits an abnormal operation stop signal to a copying machine control part.
