The present invention refers to a separator comprising a porous substrate; and a porous coating layer formed on at least one surface of the porous substrate and comprising a mixture of first inorganic particles coated with a coupling agent on the surface thereof, second inorganic particles coated with a coupling agent on the surface thereof and a binder polymer, the first inorganic particles having an average diameter of 1 to 10 µm and the second inorganic particles having an average diameter of 50 to 500 nm. In accordance with the present invention, a separator having a porous coating layer comprising two kinds of inorganic particles which are coated with a coupling agent is manufactured to minimize a mechanochemical reaction, thereby inhibiting the production of unnecessary substances, and to easily introduce functional particles. Therefore, the separator of the present invention has superior thermal stability and can prevent the performance degradation of an electrochemical device.
