[Class 108 (iii)] In a resilient mounting having a main rubber member stressed in compression by the load and an auxiliary member or members adapted to be stressed in compression by a force or forces perpendicular to the load, sliding abutment surfaces are provided between the main and auxiliary members to minimize the mutual effect of the members on each others characteristics. As shown in Fig. 2, a main compression member 1 of rubber is bonded to plates 3, 4 flanged at the edges and auxiliary compression members 7, 7<1> are bonded to the flanges 5, 5<1> and to plates 8, 8<1> which may be made of self-lubricating material, graphited artificial resin or similar friction reducing material. A small clearance may be made between the plates 8, 8<1> and flanges 6, 6<1> respectively so that free compression of the rubber 1 is permitted by a load on the plate 3 while the horizontal forces in the plane of the drawing is absorbed by the auxiliary compression members 7, 71 and the horizontal forces at right angles to the plane of the drawing is absorbed by shear stresses in member 1. In a modification the support comprises one half of that shown in Fig. 2 and in a further modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), an additional side with a member similar to 7 is provided so that horizontal forces in three directions may be absorbed. In Fig. 3, the mounting is circular in shape, the main compression member 10 being bonded to plates 11, 13 of which 13 is provided with a pin 12 slidable in a sleeve 16 bonded to the auxiliary member 15. This sleeve may be gapped at one side to permit the pin to move freely in a lateral direction through the gap so that the member 10 is stressed in shear. |
