Disclosed are an apparatus and method for providing private chatting in group chatting. At least one group chatter selected from among counterpart group chatters is designated as a private chatter, and identification information of the private chatter is displayed in a message input window of a group chat window shared for group chatting and private chatting. Also, when a drag moving from a chat log of at least one counterpart group chatter displayed in a chat log window to the message input window is detected, a group chatter corresponding to the drag motion is designated as a private chatter.
