A safety syringe 100 comprising: a barrel 104 having an opening and a needle 102 at an end thereof; a syringe plunger 108 configured to move within the barrel 104 such that an inward stroke of the syringe plunger 108 causes a substance within the barrel 104 to be expelled from the opening; a safety plunger 114, and a sheath 112 configured to cover at least partially the opening in the barrel 104 after use of the syringe. The safety plunger 114 is coupled to the syringe plunger 108 and is configured to decouple from the syringe plunger 108 at a point on the inward stroke, and to couple to the sheath 112, such that the sheath 112 and safety plunger 114 are moveable independently of the syringe plunger 108. Further movement of the safety plunger 114 and sheath 112 after decoupling at least partially covers the opening in the barrel 104. |
