529,070. Chlorinated xylenol. GLADDEN, G. W., and COCKER, W. W. May 20, 1939, No. 15047. [Class 2 (iii)] 1 : 3 - Dimethyl - 2 - chlor - 5 - hydroxybenzene is produced from crude meta-xylenol by direct chlorination without a pre-purification process. The preferred chlorinating agent is sulphuryl chloride but chlorine may also be used. The preferred starting materials are intermediates in the preparation of pure metaxylenol and tests are described to identify suitable materials. In examples (1) an intermediate xylenol fraction is chlorinated with sulphuryl chloride, and the product purified by crystallization. (2) An intermediate xylenol fraction is chlorinated by passing in a stream of chlorine at 25‹-30‹ C., and the product purified as in example (1). (3) An intermediate xylenol fraction is chlorinated with sulphuryl chloride in a closed vessel provided with an agitator and the product purified as above.
