A rotating brush is adjustably received in a brush holder by the force of a spring (7) in the direction of a collector (5), such that the contact surface between the brush and collector is changed. Two brushes have different maximum wear path. The measured electrical characteristics of the electric machine (2) are varied. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) method for operation of device for monitoring wear state of brush of commutator system; and (2) regulation or control device for monitoring wear state of brush.
