There is a need in the art for portable golf swing analysis clubs and systems that can be used on a golf course without bulky external equipment and that provide real time feedback to a golfer. This invention relates to golf clubs. More particularly, it is a system for determining performance characteristics of a golf swing using a self-contained instrumented golf club, the golf club comprising a magnetic sensor module configured to detect a vector corresponding to the earth's magnetic field relative to a head of the golf club and to resolve the vector corresponding to the earth's magnetic field into a plurality of component vectors.
