Under conditions in which print distortion occurs, the present invention reduces deviation in the horizontal direction and improves print quality. A MPU (10) calculates video data for charging printing particles according to printing detail data stored in RAM (11) using a program stored in ROM (12). When the last character to be printed is detected from the printing detail data and the last character to be printed is printed and the printing operation is completed, the MPU (10) generates video data so that a non-printing charge voltage is applied on non-printing particles, the non-printing charge voltage being a charge voltage of a level such that the non-printing particles will not skip past a gutter (25). The MPU (10) determines the number of non-printing particles on which the non-printing charge voltage is to be applied on the basis of the distance from the print head (2) to the printing object (30), the set value for character height, etc. A character signal-generating circuit (18) generates the non-printing charge voltage on the basis of the video data and applies same on a charging electrode (22).
