The present invention addresses the problem of providing a copper-free friction material that has stable frictional characteristics even when getting wet with water and shows low aggressiveness to a mating member. A copper-free friction material which comprises a binder, a friction adjusting material and a fiber base material and further contains aluminum and/or an Fe-Al intermetallic compound, alumina, chromite and a steel fiber.
