Regenerator devices (30) for use with Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) connections are disclosed which forward user data received in a modulated signal from one link (L1) of a DSL connection on to another link (L2) of the DSL connection, the signal also carrying configuration information for the connection. The regenerator includes a first transceiver (302) which receives the signal from the first link and demodulates it to obtain the user data and configuration information, and a second transceiver (306) which receives the user data and transmits it on a modulated signal to the other link. The configuration information is encoded using a first protocol but substitutes a subset of values not needed in the first protocol for values having a different meaning in a second protocol. The regenerator further comprises an analyser (303) which interprets the configuration information according to its new meaning in order to derive regenerator-specific configuration information therefrom to control transmission from the second transceiver. An access network including one or more such devices and associated methods are also disclosed. |
