An apparatus 10 for washing contaminated glass cullet 12 comprises a channel 14 which contains a liquid 16, at least one jet 26 for directing pressurised liquid at the glass cullet to agitate the glass cullet to promote separation of contaminant 22 from the glass cullet and to urge the glass cullet through the channel, and a means 23 for removing the debris/contaminate from the surface of the liquid. In use, glass cullet is immersed in the liquid in the channel and subjected to high pressure liquid sprays so that the glass cullet moves along the channel and is agitated to remove contaminant and debris wherein the contaminant and debris float to the surface of the liquid. The means for removing contaminant may be a vent and may include a deflector for skimming the surface of the liquid and/or a fan or a blower for blowing across the liquid surface. The channel may have a rectangular, triangular, V-shaped or square cross sectional and may be deployed at angle to the horizontal. The channel may further include agitators 28, baffles for directing liquid and contaminant flow, and be sub-divided into smaller channels (fig 7). The apparatus may be shaken 24. The pressure and positioning of the jets may be controlled. |
