[Classes 2 (ii) and 2 (iii)] A thin transparent film or sheet is made of a polyvinyl acetal resin plasticized with an octadecane-diol di-ester in an amount not exceeding about 30 per cent of the total weight of the film or sheet. The acetal resin may be a polyvinyl formal, butyral, iso-butyral, benzal, or acetal, or an interpolymer of different acetal forming radicals, or a mixture of polyvinyl acetals. Di-esters of octadecanediol-1 : 12 may be used. The di-ester may be formed from acetic, propionic, n- or iso-butyric, capric, caprylic, caproic, lauric, levulinic, glycollic, lactic, benzoic, benzoyl benzoic, chlorobenzoyl benzoic, hexahydrobenzoic, octahydrocinnamic, cyclohexyl acetic, furoic, or picolinic acid. The aliphatic groups in the acid. part of the ester may be branched or straight chain, substituted or not, and saturated or not. The ester may be formed from paraffinic or naphthenic acids obtained in the petroleum industry or from mixtures of acids corresponding to the higher alcohols obtained by the hydrogenation of oxides of carbon. The resin composition may be dissolved in a solvent such as methanol, acetone, ethyl formate, mixtures of methanol and benzene, or methyl acetate and methanol. The solutions may be formed into films or sheets by casting on to glass plates or polished nickel-surfaced drums. In examples, films are made from solutions of polyvinyl iso-butyral, polyvinyl benzal-butyral, polyvinyl formal, mixtures of polyvinyl butyral, isobutyral, and formal, and mixtures of polyvinyl formal, acetal, and butyral. These resins contain small proportions of hydroxyl and acetyl groups. The films are suitable for use as wrapping material or for making raincoats, capes, mittens, umbrellas, parasols, shower curtains, bridge-table covers, or tea-infusion bags. The material may be stitched or perforated without showing any marked tendency to tear. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of di-esters of other glycols, e.g. tetradecanediol-7 : 8, dodecanediol-6 : 7, cetene glycol, and hexadecanediol- 1 : 2. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. |
